6. Marty Jannetty's Reputation Hurts Him

It's only fair to say that Marty Jannetty refutes claims he was loaded/under the influence/hungover at the 1993 Royal Rumble. In fact, in select interviews, Marty has suggested that it was actually Shawn Michaels who was rough. He blames the poor quality of their key Intercontinental Title bout on HBK.

Perception matters though, and Jannetty had previous in the WWF.

Vince McMahon was appalled with the IC Title bout at the Rumble, and canned Marty overnight. Curt Hennig reportedly went to bat for him after that, which led to a brief reprieve over the summer. McMahon even stuck the Intercontinental belt on Marty for a cup of coffee, but the ex-Rocker had already shown how unreliable he was so it was never going to last.

Any hopes of a big babyface push ended at the '93 Rumble. Rightly or wrongly, he got the blame for the match vs. Shawn, and it is true that the clash between old tag-team partners was a real letdown. They'd do better on Raw in May, but that was too little too late for Jannetty.
