3. Cody Fails To Finish The Story (2023)

Sami Zayn not being able to get the job done in his hometown of Montreal was soul-destroying, yes.

But if that was the price that needed to be paid in order to ensure WWE's other ridiculously over babyface could produce an instantly iconic moment on 'The Grandest Stage', then so be it.

WWE would never have a more perfect moment to usurp 'The Tribal Chief.' It's really as simple as that. And it was that perfect scenario that made the idea of Cody Rhodes not walking out of WrestleMania 39 with the belts seem about as unlikely as it gets.

The story would surely be finished... because how could it really continue if it didn't finish here?

Well, the answer to that question has been playing out on Monday Night Raw and various PLEs ever since. 'The American Nightmare' is still one of the most popular acts in town, but his aura has definitely been diminished by that shocking failure to overcome The Bloodline in Los Angeles.

Cody could still go on to lift the title his father never held down the road. But it's safe to say that his 'Show of Shows' defeat burned a great many, and the noise when/if he finally does lift the big one will be a little less deafening due to the ones who likely stopped following this story on April 2, 2023.
