10 Fascinating WWE Backstage Facts About Cody Rhodes
8. He Was Meant To Win Money In The Bank Twice
Oh what could have been for our boy Cody. Would we have All Elite Wrestling if WWE had let him reach for the brass ring during his first run? That’s too much of a What If… situation to answer here, but there’s no doubt that he might’ve stayed longer than he did.
The first time Rhodes was promised the Money in the Bank briefcase was in 2012, when he was on the SmackDown brand and one of only a few wrestlers in the match that could’ve won it. Unfortunately, Dolph Ziggler was also in the bout and on the day he was handed the opportunity instead.
Let’s not pretend that Ziggler’s cash-in isn’t one of the best ever, but it sucks to be Cody watching from afar knowing he could’ve had the same pop.
Jump ahead a year and once again Cody’s one of the favourites. Not only that, but he’d been told that he’d be winning this year. History repeated itself. His Team Rhodes Scholars partner Damien Sandow took the briefcase and went on to do… nothing with it. Sandow lost his cash-in match to John Cena and fans were left wondering what the point of it all was.
So was Cody, he left a few years later after being forced to play Stardust.
