In the midcard of the 1996 King of the Ring, Ahmed Johnson would defeat Goldust to become Intercontinental Champion, after a so-so match. The title switch was in a pedestrian bout, while the events leading up to it were far more explosive.

The feud began when Goldust, aggressive in his sexual thrust, accosted Johnson when "The Pearl River Powerhouse" was laying prone on a stretcher backstage. Per the work, Goldust was supposed to give Ahmed unnecessary mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the underlying intentions being made patently obvious.

According to Johnson, Goldust was supposed to place his hand over Johnson's mouth and kiss that instead, with nobody watching being the wiser. They had rehearsed it that way, but when the cameras were rolling, Goldust (for reasons unknown) did it without the hand and put his lips on Johnson's without any filter. As Johnson tells it, he was so angry that he went after Goldust once the cameras were off, but Dustin Runnels had already left the building in a rush.
