Rikishi was the Intercontinental Champion at the time of King of the Ring, having won it days earlier on SmackDown from Chris Benoit. He would become the second of three men (joining The Rock and Rob Van Dam) to lose the King of the Ring tournament finals while reigning with the IC belt, dropping the last match to Kurt Angle.

Rikishi would later express disappointment with that decision, admitting in a shoot interview that he figured he was over enough to be given the coronating win. He also complained about having to work three matches in one night if he wasn't going to be given the honor of winning the tournament. Considering that his first two matches (with Benoit and Val Venis) were only three minutes long apiece, and the match with Angle didn't quite make six, it's a bit hard to see his point of view.
