At WrestleMania 31, Sting was smashed in the head with a sledgehammer by Triple H, only to shake his hand out of respect moments later. Through that point, Sting's involvement in WWE had been less than optimum, all going downhill after his dramatic debut at Survivor Series.

If the plans came to fruition, his SummerSlam involvement would've probably been far better-received. According to Dave Meltzer, the earlier plans for SummerSlam would've seen a six-man tag where Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, and Erick Rowan would've come together to take on Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and a mystery partner. That partner: Sting, re-establishing his presence before his match with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions the next month.

Those plans went out the window when Rowan suffered an arm injury at the end of June, and the planned match was pared down to Wyatt and Harper vs. Reigns and Ambrose instead.
