"The Hitman" would be the last wrestler eliminated from Dusty Rhodes' Dream Team. He was booked to nearly overcome three-on-one odds before succumbing to Ted Dibiase after a well-worked match-within-a-match.

The day before the show, Bret was in Providence, RI for a live event, flanked by brother Bruce and brother-in-law Jim Neidhart. While waiting to see McMahon regarding an employment opportunity for Bruce, father Stu Hart had phoned the venue with awful news: Bret's older brother Dean had passed away from kidney disease at age 36.

Bret later wrote that he was determined, through his grief, to have as good a performance as possible in Dean's memory. When he and Neidhart made their entrance, commentator Roddy Piper made it a point to tell the home audience about the loss of Dean, and that Bret was dedicating the match to him.
