By this stage of his WWE tenure, combination Sasquatch/cyborg Haku was embedded deep in the midcard, usually on hand to put over name-wrestlers on their way up the ladder. He wasn't originally set to work Survivor Series 1990, but was drafted onto Earthquake's Natural Disasters, replacing Rick Rude.

Rude would've been positioned in the match across from The Big Boss Man, with whom he was entering into a feud with. However, Rude ended up leaving the promotion in October 1990, stemming from a disagreement over compensation.

While Rude was out with an injury, WWE was still advertising his name for house show dates, knowing full well that he wouldn't be on hand to work. When Rude demanded to be paid in accordance with his name being used to draw fans, WWE refused, and a furious Rude took his leave.
