There were many on the internet at the time who predicted (mostly out of unbridled optimism) that The Undertaker would unseat new WWE Champion Kurt Angle at Survivor Series. It would've been poetic, after all, if Undertaker had won the belt ten years after debuting at the 1990 Survivor Series.

Instead, Angle retained, after an elaborately screwy finish that involved brother Eric. It made Angle the first man to retain the WWE Championship at the event since Bret Hart forced Shawn Michaels to submit in 1992.

With the exception of 1993 (in which champion Yokozuna took part in an elimination match), every Survivor Series since Hart's win, through 1999, saw the gold change hands. Bob Backlund, Hart, Sycho Sid, Michaels, The Rock, and Big Show all left Survivor Series with the WWE Championship between 1994 and 1999, after entering as challengers.
