Water is wet, the sun is warm, Kurt Angle worked through an injury, news at eleven. Earlier in 2003, it seemed like Angle was destined for a year on the shelf, staring down spinal fusion surgery that he desperately needed. However, a minimally-invasive procedure performed by Pittsburgh neurologist Dr. Hae Dong Jho that spring had Angle back in the ring by the end of June.

Angle's hard-hitting style (as well as some general skepticism from others about the effectiveness of Dr. Jho's procedure) had him once more experiencing spinal complications. It was reported that Angle had bone chips in his neck, and was taking it as easy as possible around the time of the pay-per-view.

After Survivor Series, Angle missed two months of ring action, doing little more than non-wrestling TV appearances, and guest referee spots on house shows. He returned to action shortly before the 2004 Royal Rumble.
