After making it through Survivor Series with the WWE Championship in tact, Punk was able to join the short list of men who managed to hold the belt for 365 days and beyond. The fans were aware of Punk's milestone, as it had been built into the storyline.

The seven predecessors of Punk include Bruno Sammartino (twice), Bob Backlund, Pedro Morales, Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, and John Cena (his September 2006 to October 2007 reign).

There were two instances where the champion fell just short of the One Year Club. Hulk Hogan's second reign of 1989-90 fell one day short when he lost to Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VI. Diesel's 1994-95 reign came up a week short after losing to Bret Hart at Survivor Series.
