Six nights before Survivor Series, WWE decided that the Charlotte vs. Paige Divas Championship match needed to have a ton of gasoline spilled onto its meek fire. So they went ahead and had Paige insult the memory of Charlotte's brother Reid Flair, who had passed away less than three years earlier of a drug overdose at age 25.

Instead of ramping up the tension for the pay-per-view showdown, WWE royally pissed off much of its audience, who felt there was no need to use such real-life horror in a wrestling storyline.

WWE played it off as though Charlotte herself pushed to invoke her deceased kid-brother's name into the story, but that's a highly-dubious claim. In any event, the searing backlash led to WWE excising all mentions of Reid going forward, including during the Survivor Series match and preceding build-up videos.
