10 Forgotten WrestleMania Gems

3. Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes - WrestleMania XXVII

When Rey Mysterio delivered a 619 to Cody Rhodes, breaking his nose during a match on SmackDown, he never could have imagined that the incidental injury he caused would come back to haunt him to the extent that it did. The broken nose triggered a mental breakdown in Rhodes, leading him to wear a mask, label himself as ugly, and humiliate opponents by forcing paper bags over their heads after matches. His entrance music was dark, his promos rambling diatribes of an unstable young man. Once dubbed "Dashing," he had transformed into a disturbed competitor. His model good looks lost forever, at least in his own warped mind, Rhodes had the opportunity to prove his worth at WrestleMania XXVII as he battled Mysterio in one of the highest profile singles matches of his career. Mysterio and Rhodes had proven their chemistry in several matches prior to their showdown on that evening. They picked up where they had left off, delivering another fantastic match that proved that the second-generation Rhodes was capable of thriving in a big spot, on the biggest show of the year. The nearfalls were dramatic, very much in the same way that Rey's match with Matt Hardy was some eight years later. In the end, it was Mysterio's knee brace that proved his own downfall as Rhodes removed it and bashed Mysterio in the face with it, leading to the deranged young Superstar using Cross Rhodes to pick up his biggest win yet.
