10 Forgotten WWE NXT TakeOver Classics
2. Andrade 'Cien' Almas Vs. Roderick Strong - NXT TakeOver: San Antonio
Roderick Strong and Andrade 'Cien' Almas had an irrefutable cracker at TakeOver: San Antonio, acting as the coming out party for the latter in WWE. Until this point, the former La Sombra had been nothing more than a blight on an already stacked NXT roster.
By the end, though? He certified himself as a banger machine.
Wrestling a typically strong TakeOver bout for the time, the pair combined banal rest holds with expert strikes and marvellous backbreakers from the future Undisputed Era man to craft such an outstanding affair. Andrade was as elegant in his character work here, being in full tranquilo form, as Roddy was at each backbreaker variation he pulled off.
In the 12 minutes they shared in-ring, the duo turned an otherwise meaningless bout into a spectacle that, if masterfully perfected, could be deemed worthy of the TakeOver main event spot. It was Roderick Strong that won the match, downing Andrade via Sick Kick, but it was Almas that won over the fans. That's why he went on such an impressive run afterwards that he became NXT Champion by year's end.
Similar to Dakota Kai vs. Tegan Nox at TakeOver: Portland, this match went down on a TakeOver that not many remember. It's an issue that has plagued the majority of the January TakeOvers, sadly. Regardless, the pair overdelivered.
