10 Former WWE Talents Who Thrived in Lucha Underground

4. Rey Mysterio

Prior to his official WWE departure in February 2015, Rey Mysterio hadn't competed on programming in close to a year. Even had he returned, he likely would have been wasted the same way he was multiple times before, so him leaving the company was the best thing that could have happened to him.

It was only inevitable that he would surface in Lucha Underground. It took a little longer than expected, but he signed with the promotion in time to make his debut at the start of Season 2, acting as the mentor for Dragon Azteca Jr. He didn't compete in his first match in Lucha Underground until March as part of Aztec Warfare, and when he was announced as a participant in the bout, The Temple came unglued.

Similar to his Royal Rumble performance over a decade earlier, he lasted the entire match up until his elimination at the hands of the eventual winner, Matanza Cueto. Shortly thereafter, he captured the Trio Championship with Dragon Azteca Jr. and Prince Puma. Talk about a dream team!

Of course, Lucha Underground tapes their shows every few months with Seasons 2 and 3 already in the can. It's the perfect schedule for Mysterio to be working at this stage of his career, and he's also an excellent ambassador for the promotion given his incredible star power.
