Christian was inserted into the main event scene on SmackDown after Edge retired not long after WrestleMania XXVII. He defeated Alberto Del Rio to finally win his first World title at Extreme Rules but lost the Championship two days later to Randy Orton at SmackDown. This was all part of a long storyline though to turn Christian heel and feud with Orton in the upcoming months.

At Capitol Punishment Orton beat Christian in the rematch with the RKO, despite Christian’s foot being under the bottom rope. This led to Money in the Bank, with Christian demanding another shot at the title. Christian’s lawyers in storyline had the arrangement put in place that if Orton lost the match through “poor officiating” or disqualification he would lose the World Heavyweight Championship.

Christian cunningly spent most of the match at MITB taunting and goading Orton into getting disqualified. The ending had Orton set him up to hit the RKO but Christian cowardly pleaded for mercy in the corner before spitting in Orton’s face. This played up Orton’s real-life anger issues as Orton became enraged and beat on Christian before kicking him in the groin. And just like that Christian became World Champion for a second time.
