10 Gimmicks That WWE Milked Dry

1. Breakaway Barricades

The break-away barricade spot may receive a pop from a live crowd, but for WWE fans watching on the ole boob-tube, the act has certainly lost its shine.

Much like the gimmicked announce table, the bit has been used so often it's become a regular feature of big-guy matches. Perhaps the worst offenders are Romain Reigns and Braun Strowman, who seem to crash through the ringside area every time they find themselves in the main event.

The ease with which the corner collapses also undermines other moments, such as when wrestlers misjudge Suicide Dives. The barrier comes off as sturdy as concrete during these occasions, yet the breakaway schtick makes them come off as flimsy as wet cardboard.

Demolishing the barricade also draws attention to the fact that underneath the black padding is generally a steel security railing similar to those used at shopping malls. Although WWE's rails made be anchored (it certainly doesn't want kiddos getting too close), the average joe could dismantle them with a little jostling. A performer's back hitting the fence is enough to push it against the kneecaps of ringsiders.

Two performers going through the barrier certainly makes for a terrific visual (and loads of fun in the video games). Still, to keep receiving those "Holy sh*t!" chants, it's in WWE's best interest to use the spot a little less often, reserving it for larger opponents during major blow-off matches.
