Pillman was an innovator in the early 1990s, combining the American, Mexican, and Japanese wrestling styles to craft an exciting moveset that American audiences hadn't seen. Jushin Liger was already a star for New Japan Pro Wrestling, winning the IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship in May 1989, before coming to WCW. Liger and Pillman proceeded to have a fast-paced, hard-hitting, and innovative match that brought the live crowd to its collective feet. Liger flew around the ring like no one had ever seen before, busting out a moonsault, flying headscissors, and a somersault senton from the top rope. The crowd was actually stunned by some of the moves since they were brand new to American wrestling fans. Pillman responded by suplexing Liger from the apron to the floor, nailing Liger with a dropkick when Jushin came off the top, and a nasty backdrop suplex. After battling over a superplex, Liger went to finish his opponent with a flying headbutt off of the top but only hit the canvas. Pillman quickly grabbed his foe and cradled him, getting the desperationg win and escaping Superbrawl II with the Light Heavyweight title. The crowd went absolutely wild for both guys and it was a sign that a new, modern wrestling style was going to be taking over North America.
