10 Great WWE Matches With One Notable Botch

7. The Authors Of Pain Vs. #DIY (NXT TakeOver: Chicago 2017)

Like Owens and Zayn, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa are two wrestlers whose careers will forever be intertwined.

The two competed as the tag team "#DIY" in NXT and became NXT Tag Team Champions in 2016. It was a match for those same championships that began one of the greatest wrestling rivalries of the modern era and maybe of all time.

At TakeOver: Phoenix in 2017, #DIY challenged the team that defeated them for the tag titles, The Authors of Pain, to a rematch. The titles were contested for in a ladder match that wasn't short on crazy spots and heightened drama, including a terrific double splash that saw #DIY crush both members of AOP from the top of a ladder. Sadly, this wasn't enough for Gargano and Ciampa to regain the championships.

It was this loss that led to one of the most shocking moments in NXT history: Ciampa turning heel on Gargano and attacking him after the match.

We all know the story from here, but who knows how it would have gone had Ciampa not injured himself in the double splash spot. This botch cost Ciampa eight months of his career and put his storyline with Gargano on hold.

However, this did not detract from the narrative. In fact, it may even have improved it. See, not all botches are bad. Unless you're Tommaso Ciampa's knee.
