10 Greatest Final Two Competitors In The WWE Royal Rumble
8. Lex Luger & Bret Hart (1994)
This Rumble was all about the changing of the guard. After Hogan’s dominance and departure, ’94 saw two men given a chance to prove their worth as the next big thing. One of them was Bret “The Hitman” Hart, one of the finest technicians ever to grace the ring and a bonafide all-time great. The other was Lex Luger.
That’s a little unfair on The Narcissist, who looked to all the world to have the goods for the job, and his final tussle with Bret is appropriately dramatic. It genuinely feels like the dawning of a new era, an opportunity for either man to grab in order to grasp Vince’s proverbial brass ring once and for all.
It is limited to a brief skirmish, rather than some of the drawn out mini-matches we’d come to enjoy in future years, but the inventive finish lives long in the memory. Both men go over the top at once – this time intentionally – and after much discussion, a draw is declared.
It’s a smart end they’re yet to purposefully rehash, and could potentially have made megastars out of both men. As it was, one man would stake his claim on greatness at that year’s WrestleMania X.
