10 Greatest In-Ring Promos Of All Time

1. Burying The Hatchet

Most of the best promos in wrestling are ones which build a feud, intensify a rivalry, and ultimately, persuade fans to part with their cash for the upcoming denouement. Yet one of the most memorable in-ring segments in WWE history flew in the face of all this prevailing logic, ending not in a pull-apart brawl, but an embrace.

For many fans, it was a sight they had long dreamed of. After thirteen years of embitterment between Bret Hart and his former employers after his disgraceful treatment in Montreal at Survivor Series '97, just the once unimaginable prospect of the 'Hitman' alighting in a WWE ring once more would have been enough. Instead, they received one of the most profoundly touching moments to ever take place in the squared circle.

Few of Bret Hart's residual grudges were as deep-set as his one with Shawn Michaels, so the very idea that they would once again share a ring was utter fantasy. However, to the absolute astonishment of fans who had long since given up hope, the two men unexpectedly settled their differences whilst Hart was the host of Raw on 4 January 2010.

When Shawn stopped dead in his tracks and turned to face his former rival after the two had appeared to make amends, many in attendance were dubious, resigning themselves to it all being an elaborate angle. Instead, the 'Heartbreak Kid' clutched Hart in a heartfelt embrace, and the crowd exploded. Finally, there was a satisfying closure to one of wrestling's most drawn-out episodes, and at last, the pair could move on.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
