10 Greatest Title Changes In NXT History

8. The Lucha Dragons Beat The Ascension – TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way

Yep, these two teams used to be in the tag title picture. Oh how loathsome the main roster is.

At only the second ever TakeOver event, NXT Tag Team Champions The Ascension defended their titles against the team of Sin Cara and Kalisto, known as The Lucha Dragons.

Konnor and Viktor had held the titles for a whopping 364 days at this point, the longest reign with any championship in NXT, and had taken great pleasure in destroying their opponents.

Kalisto had already tried and failed to capture the tag titles at the first TakeOver event, teaming with El Local (who was Alberto Del Rio’s old ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, in a mask) in a losing effort. With the help of Sin Cara, Kalisto took it to The Ascension on this night in a battle of speed vs size, power vs agility, good Ascension things vs good Lucha things. You know, a classic story.

To everyone’s great surprise, the masked underdogs unseated the champs to win the gold, providing the Full Sail fans with a real feel-good moment to open this show.

Nobody expected The Dragons to win here, but the team had made themselves so endearing to the fans that nobody minded. This was a swerve done right.

It’s just a shame how both teams ended up after NXT.
