Bret Hart and Chris Benoit’s most well-remembered bout was their Owen Hart memorial match on October 4, 1999 on Nitro, but they delivered a worthy sequel the following month in the main event of Mayhem.

At Mayhem, WCW actually seemed kind of promising. It was early into the Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara run, which soon delved into complete nonsense, but seeing Benoit and Hart main event a pay-per-view as the last two wrestlers standing in a 32-man tournament (actually 31 since Madusa was involved) for the WCW Heavyweight Title was pretty cool.

There was a tremendous amount of respect shown between the Canadian heroes, as the two submission specialists threw their best at each other, but never played dirty.

There was some nonsense in the match as Dean Malenko dressed up as a Canadian fan to attack Benoit, and Scott Hall and Kevin Nash got involved as well, but for the most part it was a no-nonsense, technical bout that was highlighted by each individual’s passion to be the best.

The ending sequence between them was fantastic, and we saw Benoit’s dreams of becoming the champion come to an end as he was locked in the Sharpshooter with nothing left to do but tap out to the best there was that night.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
