10 Huge Stars Who Only Held The WWE Intercontinental Title Once

9. CM Punk

One such wrestler to pay tribute to the 'Macho Man', is the 'Chick Magnet' himself, CM Punk.

Currently causing a seismic shift in pro wrestling by coming out of a seven year retirement to ensure a weekly earthquake when his music hits, CM Punk honoured Savage by adopting the diving elbow into his arsenal.

He also followed in the 'Macho Man's footsteps by only holding the WWE Intercontinetal Championship once, taking the belt from William Regal on a Monday Night Raw in January 2009. Although usually used as a stepping stone to the big belt, this was not Punk's first strap in the WWE.

In 2008, Punk had cashed in the Money In The Bank contract to become World Heavyweight Champion, but injury cut that run short. An odd tag team title run with tag team extraordinaire, Kofi Kingston followed before Punk snared the IC Title, which felt like a move to build Punk back up to something resembling a main eventer.

Considering the career and legacy he left behind, Punk certainly did just that, although his self enforced hiatus came through never being treated like the top guy and his burn out from WWE's punishing schedule.

Despite the reign only lasting less than fifty days, CM Punk is a valuable name to have in the IC Title's legacy.
