10 Huge Wrestling Moments That Played Out To Silence
8. Lillian Garcia Tears The House Down
Hearing the United States national anthem sung at a WWE event isn't all that notable. Hearing the United States national sung by Lillian Garcia at a WWE event isn't all that notable. But the 13 September 2001 edition of SmackDown saw something that was as unique as it was powerful.
This episode of SmackDown came just two days after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and WWE was the first form of live entertainment or sport seen since the world was left reeling.
As we've seen over the years, the national anthem is usually something that the majority of people in attendance will proudly sing along to. Not on that 13 September night, though.
From the moment that Lillian began singing, Houston's Compaq Center fell silent and were left in respectful awe as Garcia delivered one of the most emotional, brave, defiant, powerhouse renditions of the Star Spangled Banner ever seen.
WWE has so often distastefully spun current affairs into its narrative or marketed themselves as doing things for the greater good, yet Lillian Garcia and her fine set of pipes was a genuine shared moment on that post-9/11 SmackDown.
