10 Important Steps In Goldberg's Evolution

9. First Win At Starrcade

Even though the man made his debut in September, Goldberg didn't appear on Pay-Per-View until Starrcade 1997. The idea behind programming him with Steve 'Mongo' McMichael on WCW's largest show of the year was to show how tough Bill was. McMichael was regarded as an ass-kicking, rough and ready American Football player, so WCW officials felt he'd be perfect to feed to Goldberg. The match itself was nothing special, and only went a shade under 6 minutes in length. Goldberg vs. Steve McMichael was the shortest match on the card, which would become something of a theme for Goldberg going forward. Short and sweet was very much the mindset when it came to the guy's in-ring performances, and the Starrcade match was largely a punch and kick affair. Power moves were Goldberg's forte however, and fans went wild whenever he performer his Spear and Jackhammer combination. It's fascinating to think, due to his standing on the WCW roster, but this would be one of only 2 matches at Starrcade that Goldberg would win. The other came opposite Lex Luger in 2000.
