6. Bob Backlund (vs. Bret Hart - Survivor Series 1994)
In fairness to Bob Backlund, he did the very best he could with a remarkable character change in 1994. Upon his return to the federation in '92, the pale-skinned, old-school grappler had looked woefully out of touch with what the company were looking to present. Heading into 1994 however, Backlund had cultivated a wacky persona that capitalised on his out-of-date feel. At Survivor Series 1994, Bob was set to face Bret Hart for the WWF Heavyweight Title. The match was billed as a 'Throw In The Towel' Submission bout, and should have been much better than it turned out to be. Working a slow, plodding pace, Hart and Backlund failed to grip fans over the course of almost 30 minutes during their contest. The match would come to an end when Helen Hart, Bret's mother, chucked in the towel. Watching her son struggle in Backlund's Crossface Chicken Wing submission had become too much, and Helen submitted on behalf of her child. Thus, Bob Backlund was the WWF Champion, and fans couldn't believe the old timer had won.
