While Wendi Richter vs. the Spider Lady may have been the original WWE screwjob, Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart was undeniably the more famous incarnation.

I’m just about certain you’ll already be aware of the details on this one, so I’ll try not to bore you with the intricacies. Long story short; Bret was on his way to WCW, but he was still WWF Champion. Vince was worried that he wouldn’t drop the belt, but Bret simply didn’t want to do so in Canada. Knowing Eric Bischoff was set to announce his new signing on the following night's Monday Nitro, McMahon could not afford the risk of his rival boasting about the acquisition of his champion, and so the plans for a screwjob were once again set in motion.

This time, referee Earl Hebner would call for the bell after Shawn locked Bret in the Sharpshooter, despite the fact that Bret never submitted.

Unlike Richter vs. the Spider Lady, it was a little more obvious that something was awry here, not least because Bret spat in the face of McMahon in the moments following the contest. In the following weeks, months, and years, more and more light would be shed on what really went down that evening, a truly infamous shoot moment with huge ramifications for the business.
