WWE used to be a company founded on great babyfaces - superheroes at the top of the card, fighting against foreign menaces, the inner workings of the corporation, cowardly but cunning heels, and supernatural nasties. From the modern state of the company, those days are long gone.

The last handful of genuinely great babyfaces have fallen into WWE’s lap through dumb luck, with crowds picking Daniel Bryan, Kofi Kingston, and Becky Lynch as their heroes and the bookers eventually going along with it. Drew McIntyre was a solid face champion but experienced some crowd backlash towards the end. Bianca Belair and Big E are popular, but there’s no indication WWE are all in on either of them.

A great heel is obviously important in a wrestling company, but we need a hero who can vanquish them. Tellingly, Becky Lynch specifically asked to come back as a heel, and Seth Rollins’ natural status is as a baddie, too. The top stars have no faith in WWE’s ability to book them as goodies.

Things look a lot healthier on the heel side of things, but we can’t just watch Roman Reigns stomping fools forever. On which subject…
