10 Killer PPV Openers Nobody Talks About

8. Steven Regal vs. Ultimo Dragon - WCW Slamboree 1997

One of the more fascinating aspects surrounding the world of Mixed Martial Arts is seeing fighters who favour different disciplines coming up against one another. For example, what will a wrestler do to combat a boxer, and vice versa - it's this mix of styles which grips millions, and has led to promotions such as UFC doing mega bucks on Pay-Per-View. Even though pre-determined, pro wrestling can still flourish with the same set of dynamics. Never was this more evident than when Steven Regal faced Ultimo Dragon at WCW's Slamboree 1997 supershow. Then a high-flying machine, Dragon contrasted heavily with the more ground-based style of Regal, and fans were excited to see what would happen when the pair locked up. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1ameaq_steven-regal-vs-ultimo-dragon-slamboree-1997_sport The result is one of the best openers in living memory. Regal was always under-rated by WCW's top brass, and it's great that he had such a featured role a few years later in the WWF. Speaking of WWF/WWE, Ultimo Dragon would make his way there in 2003, but fans would never really see the best of the man in the company - it was clear that WWE were looking for another Rey Mysterio success story, but Dragon seemed far less willing to learn the WWE way of doing things, and would only last a year or so in the promotion.
