10 Least Over Wrestlers To Ever Headline WWE WrestleMania
4. Yokozuna (WrestleMania IX and X)
Vince McMahon appeared to have some sort of fascination with the Samoan sumo during the early '90s. Hulk Hogan was winding down as the top dog and the WWF, now hungover from the Cartoon Era party, appeared unsure of its next creative step.
Eventually, the promotion settled on fan favourite workhorse Bret Hart to be their next guy. Seemingly the opposite of the larger-than-life Hogan, 'Hitman' was a grounded, everyman babyface with a gritty, technical style. At WrestleMania IX, Hart marched in as WWF Champion for a showdown with the gargantuan Yokozuna.
The general assumption was that the big man was a dragon for Hart to slay the way King Kong Bundy and Andre The Giant had been for 'The Hulkster'. Instead, the master of the Sharpshooter shockingly lost the belt and spent the next year finding his way back to it. In the meantime, new champ Yokozuna enjoyed an unsurprisingly wearisome angle with Hogan. Slowed down by the life-threatening level of weight he put on to play the role, the real-life Rodney Anoa'i lumbered through a selection of mediocre title defenses throughout '93.
By early '94, it was clear the Yokozuna experiment had failed to yield much reward. His evil foreigner heel work was uninspired and fans were so desperate for a more dynamic champion they'd even gotten behind Lex Luger's ill-fitting Captain America persona. At WrestleMania X, the Banzai Drop beast delivered another heatless main event with Bret Hart and was never entrusted with the main event slot again.
