10 Little Known Things You Didn't Know About SummerSlam

1. The Original Plan For SummerSlam 2014

SummerSlam 2014 is set to be a major milestone in WWE history. Whereas shows from March to July 2014 were marketed as both Network and pay per view, WWE has really thrown the kitchen sink at pushing SummerSlam as a Network event. Everything from the Lesnar vs Cena main event to the 9.99 price pushing has been one big WWE Network sell. This weekend isn't about SummerSlam, it's about WWE Network. The main event of Cena vs Lesnar has certainly switched fans on, but things looked very different just six months ago. The plan back in January was for Batista vs Brock Lesnar to be the main event. WWE had it all sketched out, babyface Batista would win the Royal Rumble before going on to win the WWE Title at Mania 30. Adored by the fans he'd then reign supreme, bringing in considerable mainstream interest attached to his Guardians Of The Galaxy film. With wrestling popularity and movie popularity, Batista would've then been the ultimate headliner for a SummerSlam match with Brock Lesnar. Things didn't work out that way though. The WWE fans turned on Batista, resenting him for being a part time wrestler who was stopping full time stars achieving their career goals (Daniel Bryan). That ruined the Guardians Of The Galaxy tie in, forcing WWE to turn Batista heel, leading to him taking extended time out from June onward. Batista vs Brock Lesnar is now being tipped as a potential WrestleMania 31 match.
