10 Little Known Things You Didn't Know About SummerSlam

4. Ric Flair Almost Jumped Ship For SummerSlam 1988

The original plan for SummerSlam 1988 was to feature Randy Savage vs Ric Flair as the main event. The Nature Boy mentions in his autobiography that Vince McMahon was very keen to land his services, making a great effort to woo him over from the NWA to the WWF. Flair was for a time receptive to the idea, leading McMahon to make the provisional plans for SummerSlam 88 to be built around the Naitch. Then at the last minute, Flair got cold feet. He decided that he was obligated to the NWA, in his heart it felt right to stay with tradition. Instead we got Hogan and Savage vs The Mega Bucks, which in itself was a popular match to the masses. It would be three more years before Flair finally jumped ship. What a main event it would have been back in 1988 though. Ric Flair debuting in the WWF at the very first SummerSlam? What a baptism that would've been for the Summer tradition. Flair and Savage would have tore the house down!
