Shane Douglas entered the 1991 Royal Rumble like a house on fire, albeit a house on fire that didn't generate a reaction from anyone else in attendance. Douglas was but a young 26-year-old at the time, and was being earmarked by many as a major potential future babyface wrestling superstar. Douglas had the look, the energy and the solidly one-dimensional offence to prove them right, but things turned out rather differently.

Even so, Douglas managed to last an impressive 26 minutes and 23 seconds in the 1991 Royal Rumble, and didn't come close to eliminating a single individual along the way. His mullet may have hindered him somewhat. Douglas spent most of his time in the ring grappling with Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine and Rick 'The Model' Martel, the two men who spent the longest time in that particular Rumble match.

The boy wonder received quite the support on commentary however, with both Gorilla Monsoon and 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper talking up his gumption quite a lot. It all counted for nothing however, and Douglas was eventually tossed over the top rope by Brian Knobs of The Nasty Boys, an elimination that the camera completely missed.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
