Once a bleach-blonde babyface, Sting completely changed in late-1996. Now a darker, more solemn-looking character, he took inspiration from Brandon Lee's guise in The Crow and reinvented himself. This represented a tremendous risk for the wrestler, since there was a chance that longtime fans wouldn't embrace his new gimmick.

As it turned out, people did. Quickly, the story developed to the point that fans were crying out to see Sting emerge from the shadows and vanquish Hollywood Hogan and his nWo cohorts. Instead of serving such a match up in rapid fashion, Eric Bischoff elected to wait it out until WCW's biggest show of the year.

It wasn't until Starrcade 1997 that Sting met Hogan in a one-on-one match. That means there was around a full year of build for the bout, a seriously impressive show of restraint from those calling the shots.

The match may have ended up disappointing some when the bell rang, but just listen to that unbelievable anticipation heading into the Starrcade main event. Before Sting and Hogan had even touched, the audience collectively held their breaths, dying to see what would happen when they did meet.
