In July 2020, from out of nowhere - he had won just one singles match all year, against the venerable Tucker - Dolph Ziggler announced himself as number one contender to Drew McIntyre's WWE Championship at Extreme Rules. You see, Ziggler had rescued McIntyre from the void he had fallen into following his release from WWE in 2014.

In an unrelated point, you can now watch your favourite Insane Championship Wrestling content on the award-winning WWE Network.

To underscore just how little regard WWE has for your intelligence, your emotional investment, not only did Ziggler just will the match into existence because he asked for it, not only did they think so little of the Ziggler/McIntyre partnership that they didn't blow it off on pay-per-view at the time, but they also buried Ziggler the previous year, too.

Question: What was Dolph Ziggler doing at Extreme Rules 2019?

Answer: Getting squashed by Kevin Owens in 10 seconds.

People have a f*cking conniption fit when AEW doesn't support its ranking system with a dissertation, but this, short of just one victory, was the equivalent to Peter Avalon challenging Jon Moxley at All Out.
