10 Monumental Decisions That Changed The Course Of Wrestling History
3. Hulk Hogan Agrees To Turn Heel
In 1996, Hulk Hogan was still rocking the same old red and yellow that he had since the mid-80's, and it was all starting to become a little tired. In fact, the infamous Hulkster had been on the receiving end of some negativity from fans for a few years, and there were even some boos to be heard at WCW events for the promotion's goody-two-shoes babyface hero. When both Kevin Nash and Scott Hall made the jump from the WWF to WCW and started proclaiming themselves 'The Outsiders', they told of a third man who would shake the very foundations of WCW and help them take over the entire promotion. At Bash At The Beach 1996, this was revealed to be Hogan, who dropped a leg on Randy Savage and dubbed the new group the 'New World Order'. It had taken a lot of soul-searching for Hulk to arrive at the decision to turn heel. Eric Bischoff had to do a lot of convincing, but it was ultimately Hogan's choice. Knowing there may be no turning back should he make the switch, Hulk was torn, but made the correct decision by embracing this new mindset. Feeling fresher than he had for years, the heel 'Hollywood Hogan' was a revelation.
