AJ Lee's WWE departure was partly born of frustration. The former Divas Champion famously lashed out at the way the company treated their women's wrestlers in February 2015, responding to directly to a Stephanie McMahon tweet encouraging the division to "use their voice," before returning to feud with The Bella Twins a few weeks later. This culminated in a WrestleMania 31 tag match pitting AJ and Paige against Nikki and Brie, with Lee retiring in the aftermath.

The Bellas and Lee were at loggerheads long before that. It first became apparent on an August 2013 episode of Raw, when a fired-up AJ shot on Nikki and Brie, whom she claimed were pushed only on account of how they looked. The barbs continued. Lee was never shy of dropping a blatant shot at the Bellas into her promos, including her famous "talent is NOT sexually transmitted" line, referencing Nikki and Brie's relationships with John Cena and Daniel Bryan.

Though the Bellas often played nice when asked about AJ in the media, Nikki did accuse Lee of turning the fans against her soon after her departure. She had the last laugh, though: Nikki took AJ's 'Diva Of The Year' Slammy Award in 2015, and later broke her record as the longest reigning Divas Champion of all time.
