Big Bad Scary Badass Grandpa Bill is one of the most beloved figures in all of wrestling. One of the real Big Fight Performers of the business, he is an instant injection of buzz whenever his name is mentioned. However, all that changed on the first SmackDown following his questionable Universal Title win over The Fiend in Saudi Arabia.

Goldberg opened the show, coming out with his usual power-walk, with the big blue belt resting on his shoulder. But the response he got from the crowd was one of pure, furious rejection. They wouldn’t have it, they just wouldn’t accept the fact that The Fiend, arguably the biggest thing in pro wrestling at the time, a character that everyone had invested their hopes and emotions in, was sacrificed to Bill Goldberg.

It was nothing short of jarring, and incredibly awkward, to see a babyface legend like Goldberg be subjected to the late 2000s John Cena treatment.
