Following the success of the inaugural Money in the Bank Ladder match at the previous year’s WrestleMania, anticipation for the sequel was rampant among the WWE Universe. What followed at ‘Mania XXII was a fast and furious affair that has remained extremely underrated, much like the event as a whole.

Won by crowd favorite Rob Van Dam, who throughout used the ladder as a creatively dangerous weapon, each competitor was afforded the opportunity to shine, with Shelton Benjamin especially dazzling with his supreme athleticism. However, this MITB match is best remembered for one awesomely spine-chilling moment.

In the early going, Ric Flair, in just his second ladder match began climbing towards the briefcase when he was quickly met by Matt Hardy. After coming to blows, ladder match aficionado Hardy swiftly moved to hit his 57-year-old opponent with a mighty superplex from the top of the ladder. The Chicago crowd erupted in a frenzy, as both men crashed to the mat. Flair sold the agonizing bump like a champ, out-bursting with the most audible groans and even temporarily retiring to the back before re-emerging later.

Kudos to the legendary Flair: the man set the tone for future daredevils to outdo him in subsequent calamities.
