10 Most Divisive Figures In Wrestling History

4. John Cena

Prosecution:

Consider Cena's match with Braun Strowman on this week's RAW. It was nowhere near as good as Roman Reigns' many matches opposite the Monster Among Men. Cena spent virtually the entire duration selling in his trademark over-exaggerated way, often as if his pulse had actually stopped. It was rote, rote stuff, the sort of David Vs. Goliath match Cena has trotted out for years in the face of a larger opponent. For the company's top babyface, he's often exceptionally unlikeable and smarmy. His CV is littered with the failed execution of moves - more Johnny Zellner than Big Match John.

Defence:

John Cena, more prone to hugging than Bayley as far as his STF goes, has amassed a catalogue of excellent matches, promos and segments over the years. His charisma and presence is such that aforementioned sloppiness is obscured by it. It takes a lot to make me emote, but that Fans Surprise John Cena video recently was a tear duct destroyer. His heart's in the right place, at least when the cameras are looking. In the fabricated world of wrestling, it doesn't matter either way.

Author Verdict:

I watch wrestling to suspend my disbelief at the emulated thrill of sport's authenticity predetermined to guarantee an uplifting outcome. Too often, Cena's style and booking has prohibited that.
