10 Most Frustrating Decisions WWE Have Made This Year (So Far)
3. Women's United States Championship Is The New 24/7 Belt
When Chelsea Green triumphed in the tournament to crown the inaugural Women's United States Champion, the future of the new belt looked brighter than the night sky on the fourth of July. Chelsea was - and is - an utter treat of a performer who guarantees entertainment whenever she's on camera, and WWE couldn't have asked for a better advertisement for the new belt (look at what she's wearing in the above photo for proof).
And then she lost it on free TV to Zelina Vega four months later, in a move that has only made less and less sense over time.
Why did WWE create a new faction for Chelsea in March (the brilliantly named Secret Hervice), only to strip her of the title in April? Why was the switch done on free TV, instead of a PPV/PLE? Why did WWE take the belt off one of the most over women on the roster to give it someone who doesn't share Chelsea's connection with the audience?
Ending Chelsea's championship run in such an anticlimactic fashion only weakened the title's credibility in the eyes of the average wrestling fan (compare and contrast with the Women's Intercontinental Championship, which changed hands at Money in the Bank and was won by legitimate megastar Becky Lynch). Rather than building the Women's US Title up to mean something, WWE's slipshod treatment of the belt has already devalued it into a prop to pass among midcard talent with nothing better to do.
Here's hoping Giulia's run can imbue the strap with some much needed gravitas, or the Women's United States Championship is going to be merged with its Intercontinental sister faster than you can say "24/7 Championship".
