Towards the end of the 1990's, it was becoming less and less rare for WCW officials to misread their own core audience. Things were beginning to spiral out of control in the promotion, a lack of clear direction was starting to visibly harm the on screen product. Thankfully, some unintentional success eased things a little.

Known collectively as The West Texas Rednecks, Curt Hennig, Barry Windham, Bobby Duncum Jr and Kendall Windham were definitely supposed to be heels. Feuding with supposedly more hip group, The No Limit Soldiers, the Rednecks aimed to garner some serious boos for poking fun at rap music.

Unfortunately, their single, 'Rap Is !*$%' proved so catchy and entertaining that it reportedly became a modest hit on country radio. All of a sudden, the more Southern sensibilities of the WCW fan base started to kick in, and Hennig and chums became the babyfaces in the rivalry. The West Texas Rednecks were only really together for a short number of months, but they were undeniably over with WCW fans. People lapped up their foolish antics, choosing to cheer them instead of Master P, Rey Mysterio and others.
