Daniel Bryan's loss was (eventually) Brock Lesnar's gain.

WWE's decision to put the title on John Cena at MITB 2014 was a short-lived fix. They needed someone to carry the torch Bryan had put down, and Cena was the easy choice. A much harder choice would come at SummerSlam, and it was one creative don't get enough praise for being ballsy enough to pitch.

Lesnar's one-sided kicking, spread across 16 minutes, made him look like a complete killer. It was as definitive a loss as Cena had been involved in since debuting, and it marked Brock's first WWE Title coronation since returning in 2012; it was also the first time since 2004 that Lesnar had held WWE's biggest championship.

After working Cena again at Night Of Champions, Brock bowed out for the remainder of the year. That shouldn't discredit him. Absent though he was on TV, Lesnar's mainstream media appeal and realistic aura made him the right man to carry WWE's top prize. Come the right moment, he was used to make Roman Reigns look tough and let someone else in on the fun.
