When WCW invaded the WWF in the summer of 2001, there was a time when the mighty World Wrestling Federation was very much on the back foot. Of course, that was before Stone Cold Steve Austin had made his sizeable presence felt.

On the Jul. 16, 2001 showing of Monday Night Raw, Austin would emerge to take out pretty much every member of the WCW/ECW Alliance, saving Team WWF just one week prior to the Invasion pay-per-view that would stage the Inaugural Brawl.

So it was a huge shock when Austin would double-cross Team WWF at that very Invasion PPV, hitting Kurt Angle with the Stunner and gifting the Alliance victory.

Why would Austin defect now, of all moments? Sure, Austin had once been a WCW guy, but that was before he signed with the WWF and became the most popular star in the company’s history, effectively helping his new employers put his former workplace out of business.

This was of course part of a major heel turn (Austin’s second of the year), in which he’d assume leadership of the Alliance, reigniting his rivalry with Vince McMahon. Ultimately, he fell short of laying waste to the WWF though, with Angle gaining retribution when he himself would betray Austin at the 2001 Survivor Series, helping Team WWF win the Winner Take All match and put a stop to the Invasion angle for good.

Double-crosses for everybody!
