Not long after breaking it off with his wife, Terri Runnels, during an interview with Jim Ross, Dustin Runnels dropped the Goldust gimmick and came out as a born again Christian, promoting "the good word" in promos and pleading with WWE audiences to find an alternative to the company's smutty product.

And who else could be considered the face of WWE's smuttiness if not the porn star-turned-wrestler Val Venis? It was a pitch-perfect pairing.

Their series of matches in 1998, beginning at Breakdown: In Your House, were an exercise in storytelling excellence. Wrestling his first match as Dustin Runnels, his new personality also changed his wrestling style. Gone were the seductive taunts and sexualized maneuvers...and gone was the heart. He lost the match in heartbreaking fashion.

It was perhaps a bit odd just how over Val Venis was during this time, especially considering how he made Runnels cry - in the ring - while gloating about stealing away his ex-wife. But the 90s were a weird time and people loved Val Venis. More than that, they just wanted their Bizarre One back.

His obvious return as Goldust was teased feverishly over the next few weeks, taunting Val with cryptic vignettes and fake-outs that got the crowds all riled up.

The matches that ensued after Goldust's return weren't exactly 5-star bouts, but they easily rank in the top tier of both wrestlers' careers.
