10 Most Underrated WWE SummerSlam Matches Of All Time

4. WWF Intercontinental Title: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude - 1989

There were actually two Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude matches at SummerSlam events. The second one was the main event of the 1990 event and this one was a midcard match for the Intercontinental Title with Rude defending against Warrior. This is the better of their two matches with this match going 16 minutes. The significance of this match going that long was that Warrior almost never had matches of that length. He was known for having short matches all the time and it was rare to see him get even 10 minutes in a bigger match like this. Rude brought out the best in him. Randy Savage was probably Warrior's best opponent, but Rude may have been second best. This one followed the classic formula with a ref bump, interference, all kinds of false finishes and did a good job of keeping the crowd interested. For the finish, Roddy Piper came out as a babyface to counter the cheating Rude, who had Bobby Heenan in his corner. Since Rude was distracted, Warrior capitalized with all of his signature moves and won the Intercontinental Title back from Rude. It's a fun match to watch for the sake of nostalgia. With all due respect to him, Warrior wasn't known for having great matches too often. This is one of the better ones. It's also great to hear the crowd response because it showed just how much the people loved the guy.
