10 Most Well-Developed Characters In Wrestling Today
1. Jon Moxley
To call Jon Moxley a complex man would not be entirely accurate. Indeed, Mox’s MO is as simple as it gets. He shows up, swaggers through the crowd, puts a beating on someone, and gets out of there. He’s a brawler and a battler; you know what you’re going to get when “Wild Thing” starts up.
But the character Moxley has cultivated a few years into his post-WWE run is something to behold. It’s hard not to contrast him to his past life as Dean Ambrose; there was a great character, but cartoonish and unbelievable (usually - but not always - in an enjoyable way).
Mox increasingly feels like a real person. He talks about his genuine struggles in heartfelt - but never exploitative - promos. He refers back to previous feuds from other promotions. He’s white hot because he feels so relatable - fans understand his character and through this a real connection is formed.
It means he can pop up anywhere - NJPW, GCW, Bloodsport - and the fully formed character is right at home. It doesn’t feel like Mox is shaping his persona, just that he’s growing and evolving like each of us does.
