10 New Directions For WWE After Backlash 2016

3. AJ Styles As WWE World Champion

In what was our third major title change of the evening, AJ Styles continued his absolutely incredible debut year by defeating Dean Ambrose to capture the WWE World Championship.

Of course, the victory arrived after a low blow so, naturally, Dean’s going to be in line for a rematch, most likely at next month’s No Mercy show. Beyond that though, what else does the future have in store for Styles with the belt around his waist?

Well, the newest of directions would probably be Styles vs. Randy Orton, but given Randy’s current involvement with Bray Wyatt, that one may not be forthcoming.

In which case, via a process of elimination, we could be set for a third and final rendition in the John Cena vs. AJ Styles feud that seemingly ended at SummerSlam. Sure, AJ was victorious in Brooklyn last month, but Cena still very much has a point to prove after appearing to give up and turning his back on the company in light of that crushing defeat. And while you could argue that Cena isn’t worthy of a rematch, other than him who else would be a suitable challenger to The Phenomenal One?

Plus, for the sheer fact that this would essentially be TNA vs. WWE with the WWE World Championship on the line, I feel like the intrigue is there to squeeze one more match out of Styles vs. Cena at some point.
