10 New Directions For WWE After SummerSlam 2016

3. AJ For The Title

In a 23-minute epic, AJ Styles managed to pull off the win of all wins as he scored a clean victory over John Cena in the SummerSlam match of the night.

This merely reinforces Styles’ standing as the top heel on SmackDown, meaning that it can only be a matter of time before he’s knocking at the door of Dean Ambrose and demanding a WWE Championship match.

Luckily, Ambrose himself managed to overcome the challenge of Dolph Ziggler fairly comfortably on Sunday evening. It seems unlikely that Ziggler will be afforded a rematch anytime soon and so there’s no reason why this Styles vs. Ambrose feud can’t get going right away.

You could argue that this is the match they should have gone with for SummerSlam in the first place, but with the SmackDown-exclusive Backlash show to build in just a few weeks, it’s probably best that they held off on this big-name title match until after the summer showcase.

Whether or not AJ can capture the belt remains another question, but with two victories over the biggest name in the business under his belt, you wouldn’t want to bet against it.
